IS THE IRISH STATE RACIST?

It is generally acknowledged that racism exists in Ireland. Every other day we hear reports of incidents of so-called “hate-speeches”, racially motivated crimes, targeting of immigrants and minorities and discrimination against ethnic groups or certain individuals on religious or cultural grounds. These usually involve individuals and groups who we could describe as non-state entities.
There has also been in relatively recent times reports of similar incidents involving public representatives and elected politicians where it might have been argued that the individuals concerned were voicing their own opinions or acting on their own convictions because they felt they were representative of the views of their constituents.

But do these racist attitudes run deeper? Is the Irish State a racist entity? Are some of the policies and actions of the state and its institutions inherently racist?

Memet Uludag is an anti-racism campaigner and activist. He ran for a seat in Dublin City council in the recent elections. He has written extensively on the subject of racism and in a recently published article “Is the Irish State Racist” (Irish Marxist Review) he addresses the questions of Racism in Legislation and Racism in the Courts and Legal System, among other sub-topics.

Joe Moore is a Cork-based member of Anti Deportation Ireland and is a long time activist and campaigner in the area of justice for immigrants and minorities. He and ADI were prominent as facilitators for the voices of asylum seekers during recent protest actions in the asylum seeker accommodation centres in Cork and elsewhere in the country.

They will be the featured speakers at a Public Meeting which will take place on Monday October 20th at 8pm. The venue is Isaac’s Hotel MacCurtain Street, Cork.
